Sprained Ankle

I recently sprained my ankle jogging with my dog, Ginger.  Ginger got tangled up in the dog leash while I was jogging downhill and when I bent over to help her BOOM! my ankle rolled and down I went.  As I lay on the curb with blood gushing from my knee, my thumb mangled and my ankle in excruciating pain I wondered how I was ever going to get home.

I began frantically waving my arms at every car that drove by to no avail.  Finally, I took a deep breath and said to myself, “God I need some help here.  Please send me someone who can take me home.”  The very next car that drove down the road came to my rescue – I don’t think it’s any coincidence that she turned out to be the pastor’s wife at a local church in town, Harvestime.

I guess that experience was a great reminder that if I’m not getting the results I desire divine intervention is only a whisper away.

Sitting & Heart Attacks

I recently read an amazing article on sedentary jobs that said those of us who sit most of the day are 54% more likely to die of a heart attack.  YIKES!

Don’t fret – as I did.  Here are their top tips to overcome this fact:

1.  Take 2 breaks an hour – you must get up and out of the chair.  Checking messages or meditating in your chair doesn’t count.

2.  Stand during phone calls – I actually like to use a headset for the phone so I can multitask, like water the plants while I talk.

3.  Don’t write long emails.  If it takes more than 15 minutes to email someone it’s not a good use of your time – just go talk to them or stand up and call.

4.  Invest in a stand up desk.

Slimming Down 4 Summer: Tips to Losing Weight Fast Part II

Welcome to Part II – Tip 4-7 For Losing Weight:

4) Supplements especially NIACIN.
Here’s my list of recommended supplements:

  • multi vitamin (I personally use Juice Plus+)
  • Vitamin D – 5,000 milligrams (our state is VERY deficient because of winters)
  • Fish Oil
  • Probiotic (promotes good digestion)
  • Calcium/Magnesium (bones/headaches)
  • NIACIN (sugar cravings)

Just a few words about Niacin.  It’s been said that niacin is good for people with alcohol or sugar addictions (mine being sugar) and since taking it I’ve seen an immediate decrease in my desire for sugar.  I don’t just take 1-2 pills, I actually take 3-6 pills when I have real, strong sugar cravings which is usually the week before my cycle.  Niacin takes the edge off of my headaches as well.  It’s one of the most amazing supplements I’ve happened upon this year.  Resource:  The Beautiful Truth available on www.netflix.com.

Experiment with it for yourself, but many agree that when it comes to supplements the recommended dosage on the bottle is very conservative.   Check with your doctor or nutritionist or do your own homework to find what works best for you.

5. Switch to Soy.

I no longer drink milk but have switched entirely to soy milk.  I drink low fat because I watch fat grams but what I love about soy is all the protein that’s in it!!  And we know protein helps you feel full longer!!!  I also use soy now in all my cooking and my family hasn’t even noticed a difference.  It’s especially good in french toast batter.  (There’s been  much debate over the value of soy but I think it’s safe to consume in small quantities and it’s a better alternative to cow’s milk.)

6. Nuts are Good!

I grew up believing that nuts are horribly fattening.  Well they are when you sit down and eat half a jar!  I’ve begun eating 3-6 organic almonds or cashews a day and it really helps me take the edge off between meals.  Again it goes back to foods with high protein help you feel full longer.

7. Cranberry Juice Water instead of Pop.

Actually a client clued me into this tip.  I buy 100% no sugar added Cranberry or Pomegranite Juice and add it to water.  It’s a great refreshing drink to have with popcorn or pizza and it helps me stay away from pop.  I used to have 1 pop a week now I have 1 pop every other week.

So there it is, 7 tips to losing weight fast.  I’ve been at an even weight since I’ve made these changes in my diet.  Every year I add a few more healthy things to eat. No more gaining 2-3 pounds every year as I move into my “wisdom” years!!!

Headaches & Niacin

I used to get 2-3 migraines a week when I was a schoolteacher.  Now that I am a spiritual teacher I get a severe headache 1-2 a month.  It’s usually around the time of a full moon or a drastic weather change (I looked outside and noticed a full moon last night when this happened and the weather guy said tomorrow is going to be the coldest day of the entire winter season) those two in combination usually put me to bed with a severe headache by 7pm.

My goal is to be headache free or to find something that eliminates them before they take on a life of their own.  I’ve tried and done virtually everything under the sun to no avail but…

Drum roll please…I think I may have found it!!  I am still in the early stages of my study but yesterday a severe headache began to come on in the morning so I took 2 niacin.  It seemed to hold it off and then after lunch it began to come back and I asked myself what should I take?  I heard clearly inside my head:  Take 2 more niacin.  So I did.  It went away but started to come back around dinner.  And I heard it again…take 2 more niacin.  But I forgot and relaxed in front of the TV until bedtime at 9pm.

My husband and I watched a healthy documentary on Netflix and the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous found that when addicts took 3000 mg of niacin their addictive desires were virtually eliminated and they were calmer.

I am not an addict but I do have headaches.  I am not sure why Niacin popped into my mind to take for a headache but I do know that it helped, considerably and much better than anything else I’ve tried.

I shall keep you posted as to whether this was a fluke or if it really works.  The next headache that comes on will be the true test. ♥
